Getting to Koh Tao is cheap, and easy, by ferry from Koh Samui or the mainland. Book a day or so in advance with Lomprayah in high season to ensure a ticket.
1. Freedom Beach

Description
Freedom Beach is a beautiful, small bay at the south end of Koh Tao. It’s known for its powdery sand, clear water, tree-lined shore, and shaded relaxation areas. The beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling around the rocky outcrops, and enjoying quiet sunsets. The area is clean, peaceful, and less developed, with only a handful of traditional bungalows and a rustic beach bar. There’s a small entrance fee, but it also provides access to the nearby John Suwan Viewpoint.
Location
South coast of Koh Tao, near Chalok Baan Kao Bay
How to Get There
By moped or taxi: Travel to Chalok Baan Kao, then turn toward Freedom Beach before OK Bungalows; park near Taa Toh Bay
A short, steep walk (3-5 minutes) from the parking area down to the beach
Also accessible by a coastal path from Chalok
Chalok Baan Kao Bay

Description
Chalok Baan Kao Bay is the third largest and one of the quietest beaches on Koh Tao. The area is laid-back, with a gentle sandy shoreline and a relaxed village vibe. Calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families or those looking to unwind. While the bay itself isn’t known for snorkeling, there are several fantastic swimming and snorkeling spots nearby, such as Freedom Beach and Shark Bay. Chalok has some good dive schools and is also a good base for exploring viewpoints and quieter southern bays. My favourite place to stay if you want a quiet, peaceful vibe.
Location
South of Koh Tao
Stretches for just over half a kilometer
How to Get There
By moped or taxi: Well-maintained roads lead right into town, with plenty of parking for scooters
On foot: Beach is easily accessible from anywhere in the Chalok village area; you can also walk between Chalok and Freedom Beach or June Juea Beach by scenic paths
No entrance fees for the beach itself
Sai Ri (Sairee Beach)
Unwinding in your hotel room, you enjoy a stunning view of the sunset over Sairee Beach, where the calm sea meets the horizon, crafting an ideal romantic setting.
Description
Sairee Beach (often referred to as Sai Ri) is the liveliest and longest stretch of sand on Koh Tao, popular for its golden sands, palm trees, and calm, shallow waters. It’s famous for its social scene—lined with restaurants, beach bars, and spots for volleyball or sunset cocktails. Snorkeling is possible on the offshore coral reef, though marine life is less diverse than at some smaller bays. Sairee is the perfect location if you want swimming, nightlife, and plenty to eat and drink, all in one place.
Location
Western shoreline of Koh Tao
About 1.8km in length
How to Get There
Walkable from the main ferry pier in 10-30 minutes, depending on what part you stay
Well signposted with easy access by taxi, or your accommodation will often provide a free shuttle
Sai Nuan

Description
Sai Nuan is a peaceful, less-developed beach with a retro backpacker vibe. Lined by palm trees, rustic swings, and small bungalows, it feels like a step back in time. The atmosphere is laid-back, ideal for chilling out, reading a book, or swinging in a hammock. Sai Nuan boasts soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and wonderful snorkeling opportunities—plus occasional visits from turtles.
Location
Southwest coast of Koh Tao, just below Jansom Bay
How to Get There
By moped: Take the coastal road from Mae Haad toward Chalok, turning off toward Sai Nuan; some sections are steep
On foot: A coastline walking path starts at Sensi Paradise Resort in Mae Haad, roughly a 30-minute walk through well-signposted jungle trails
By boat: Longtail taxis can drop you off on the beach, which is also a fun way to arrive
Ao Hin Wong

Description
Ao Hin Wong is a hidden gem on Koh Tao’s northeast coast, known for its seclusion and outstanding snorkeling. Surrounded by lush palm trees and dramatic boulders, the small pebble and sandy beach offers a feeling of detatchment from the rest of the world. The water here is crystal-clear, with vibrant coral formations and breathtaking marine life just beneath the surface—perfect for both casual swimmers and dedicated snorkelers. I once swam with a giant turtle in waist deep water! The bay can sometimes be peaceful, sometimes lively when the beach bar ups the volume, or a local band strike up on the beach.
Location
Northeast coast of Koh Tao
Surrounded by green hills and massive granite boulders
How to Get There
Reachable by moped or taxi from Mae Haad or Sairee
The final road down is steep and a bit rough, but recent improvements make it much easier
From the parking area, there’s a short walk down to the water through palm groves and over rocks
What is your favourite beach on Koh Tao?
Sairee Beach
Mae Haad Beach
Chalok Baan Kao Bay
Freedom Beach
